M1: 28 September 2019 - Newton-le-Willows

The Lancashire Association of Change Ringers, Wigan Branch arranged to attend an ART Module 1 course on September 28th, 2019. Run by Graham Nabb, with 11 ringers from across the branch, we had an excellent ram-packed day hosted at Newton-le-Willows.

The day began with Graham explaining how ART came about and what it has been trying to achieve. All our attendees had to either laugh or cry at the stunningly obvious observations that we’d failed to notice, or failed to act upon, over the years! My hats off to those who, having taught for several decades, embrace the information and look to improve what they’re doing even now.

It’s no enviable task to convince long standing, and excellent, teachers to re-think the way they operate. ART has the fortunate position of course that what they are saying is factual, it’s sensible, it’s obvious (now that you mention it!), and although we have some queries and thoughts it’s near impossible to disagree with anything he is saying.

Overall the course was brilliant. It was engaging, entertaining and thought provoking. The mixture of practical and theoretical sessions were balanced nicely to allow for a well-rounded experience.

There are a number of learners throughout the branch that will soon be benefiting from our learning experiences and we’ll be looking to organise more sessions, both internally and with ART, in the future.
