M1: 8 January 2022 - South Petherton

I attended the ART Module 1 Bell Handling Course on Saturday 8th January at South Petherton led by one of the ART Tutors, Paul Lewis. I have to say I didn't really know what to expect as this is the first time I've attended a course run by ART, but having taught a few learners I was really interested in learning ways to improve my teaching. We were made very welcome, both by Helen Beaufoy who arranged the course and also by Paul, with plenty of coffee and cakes on hand organised by Helen and tower captain, Rosemary Heard.

The course was structured really well with a good mix of theory presentations and practical sessions in the tower for us to experiment on each other. While there was a clear agenda and plan for the course it wasn't prescriptive and we were able to draw on both our own experience and the experience of other students.

With Paul's guidance I was given new skills and gently led towards a new and much improved method for teaching others to ring which I think will make learning a more enjoyable, safer and perhaps less stressful experience. I’m already arranging a session with my first learner to experience this way of teaching. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the day and whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to teach others or to perhaps improve their teaching method.
