M1: 16 Feb 2019 - Kirtlington

I was interested to learn how to teach bell handling in my tower and I was recommended to attend the ART course - Module 1 “Teaching Bell Handling”. This took place in Kirtlington in a lovely church, St Mary the Virgin, with a ring of 8.

The course, led by Paul Lewis, ART Tutor from Shropshire, was well attended and started at approximately 9.30am running until 5pm. There was a good mix of theory and practical teaching, with well scheduled breaks for tea and coffee – not forgetting a delightful lunch!

The theory sessions gave an introduction into the role of a teacher. It highlighted the following:

  • good practice
  • assessment
  • correcting misconceptions
  • the importance of direct, constructive feedback.

Each theory session was followed by a practical bell handling session in which we were directed how to teach new ringers from the very beginning. All practical aspects were well modelled by Paul and support was given as we were working in groups of two or three, practicing these teaching techniques.

Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. I have learned a lot and am feeling excited and confident to teach new ringers going forward.
