M1: 22 April 2023 - Nevern

What a great day we had at St Brynach’s, Nevern for the ART Module 1 Bellhandling Course!! Eleven ringers from across the St David’s Diocesan Guild congregated at Nevern Church Hall, where we were greeted by Paul Lewis, our fabulous ART tutor. We were all treated to gorgeous cake, tea and coffee, which continued at various times throughout the day. Thank you so much, to Jane Heard.

At the start we were given an introduction to the philosophy and aims of ART - to establish a structured and progressive route of skills development in the teaching of bell handling, with each of us receiving a shiny pack of ART resources!! Paul’s presentations were clear, informative, and often reassuringly humorous! Everything was nicely broken up into bitesize theory sessions with practical ringing activities up in the tower, covering the two strokes, putting them together, ringing up and down and dealing with handling faults. I think that most of us found that the hardest thing was pretending to be a ringing novice during our tower sessions!

Lunch was just a quick walk away at the local pub – excellent! Then back to the hall for more tea & cake to help our brains deal with more teaching & learning. We finished the day up in the tower by ringing loud and proud for 10 minutes on all 10 bells! Yay!

Thank you so much Paul, for coming way out to West Wales, and for enriching us with your knowledge, experience and patience!! I have already put into practice a few of the activities and ideas which you shared with us. Kind thanks to Peter Heard for organising & hosting the event, and to all the Nevern ringers for allowing us to use your lovely bells!
