M1: 22 April 2023 - St Columb Major

On a wet and chilly April day four students arrived promptly at 9:00am to sign in to the ART Teaching Course M1.

The full day was divided into a series of PowerPoint presentations, each of which led into practical sessions in the nearby ringing chamber at St Columb Church. In the tower two of the bells had tied clappers and we worked in pairs, alternating as pupil and teacher, to put into practice the techniques just seen in the presentations.

The course covered all aspects of handling up to the point where a student would be ready to ring in rounds, including raising and lowering the bell. It is an intensive day but the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and the constant supply of hot drinks and snacks (plus pasties for lunch from the local butcher) was much appreciated (Thank you, Denise!)

There was plenty of opportunity for questions, discussion and chatting with Phil, Denise and our fellow students.

My fellow students comment as follows:

“A very engaging and informative course. Phil is a great role model. Great venue, perfect for teaching/learning.”

“Very helpful tips and tricks. New ideas. Very good team-building day.”

“Very relaxed, easy to access, practical and theory-based training. Welcoming environment and great food."

Thank you, Phil and Denise…a very worthwhile day!
